How long the phase after ovulation lasts, and why counting back gives a range
Evidence last assessed 2026-10-10.
In short
- What the research shows
- In a large dataset the phase after ovulation averaged 12.4 days, most cycles between 7 and 17.
- What it doesn't show
- Counting back from your period gives a range of days, never one day, and it is an estimate.
- When it's worth raising with a professional
- If your cycles often change length by more than a week, or you want to know whether you ovulate, a clinician can check with a blood test.

What the evidence says
The phase after ovulation runs until your next period. It varies less than the phase before ovulation, but it does vary, between women and from one cycle to the next. So counting back from a period that has arrived gives a range of days, never one day.
In 612,613 cycles from 124,648 app users, the phase after ovulation averaged 12.4 days, with 95% of cycles between 7 and 17 days; the phase before ovulation averaged 16.9 days, between 10 and 30 days. Most of the difference between cycle lengths came from the days before ovulation. Clinical charting studies also found the phase after ovulation varies.
What this does not show
This is an estimate, never a confirmation. The large dataset estimated ovulation with an app's own method. A forward estimate from past cycles is wider still, and it is wrong whenever a cycle runs longer or shorter than usual. It is not a way to avoid or plan a pregnancy.
